Climalife UK Managing Director Allan Harper has paid tribute to his predecessor, Mel Bridges, who died earlier this year at the age of 82.
Mel joined IDS Refrigeration in 2003 and led the business for seven years as General Manager. He played a key role in steering IDS Refrigeration through significant industry changes, including the company’s acquisition by the Dehon Group, a major European distributor of refrigerants. Mel described this transition as a positive step that reinforced IDS’s position in the market.
Under his leadership, IDS Refrigeration became known for its proactive stance on industry standards. Mel led the company to only supply refrigerants to contractors employing suitably trained and qualified engineers, ahead of regulatory requirements. This initiative was widely praised as forward-thinking and responsible.
Mel retired in 2011 after 33 years in the refrigeration and air conditioning sector, handing over to Allan Harper. His retirement was marked by a celebration of his achievements and contributions to the industry. He had sadly been unwell for some time, and at the time of his death in April, it was not possible to inform his wider network of friends and ex-industry colleagues.
After attending a belated service to celebrate his life, Allan Harper commented: ‘It was very sad to hear of Mel’s passing. I had the pleasure of knowing him for several years and he will always be remembered as the key to the start of the success at IDS. He was always able to get the best out of those he worked with and to make business enjoyable.’’
Mel is survived by his wife, Anne, and his three loving daughters, Jacqui, Fee and Allison.
