Ian Rippin, CEO at MCS, comments on the latest BUS figures: “The latest government figures show that October was the third highest month on record for applications to the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) - with 4,013 submitted – bringing the total number of BUS applications to over 100,000. This rising demand coincides with the best-ever year for certified renewable installations, as recorded on the MCS Data Dashboard, as we have now surpassed 300,000 heat pump installations since the Scheme began. Half of all heat pump installations under the Scheme were installed in the last three years, signalling that this strong demand has coincided with the introduction of BUS.
“It is great to see that the demand for grants towards low-carbon heating technologies continues to rise, and with last week’s announcement that BUS will soon offer grants for air-to-air heat pumps and heat batteries, there will be greater choice for consumers exploring how they heat their homes. The expansion of BUS will make home-grown energy even more accessible to a wider range of homes.
“MCS is already working closely with the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) to ensure rigorous standards are in place in preparation for the expansion of the BUS scope. This includes updating our Heat Pump Standards to cover air-to-air products and installations and developing a Thermal Energy Storage Systems (TESS) Installation Standard.
“It is clear that BUS is a vital part of the UK’s push towards net-zero by making home-grown energy more affordable for consumers. As the sole certification scheme for government clean heat measures, MCS is focused on making the transition to clean heat fair, supportive, and one that works for everyone.”
