Building on the success of the first refrigeration LEGO kit provided by FJB in 2024 the Institute of Refrigeration (IOR) has announced the launch of even more LEGO kits in collaboration with Danfoss. The kit, which models a working refrigeration plant, will be made available to STEM Ambassadors to support outreach activities in schools, colleges, and other education settings.

IOR President Lisa Jayne Cook FInstR welcomed the new series, saying: “We are delighted to bring the LEGO kit back for our STEM Ambassadors. The first edition exceeded all expectations. This new series sponsored by Danfoss gives our STEM Ambassadors a powerful, hands-on tool that helps young people visualise how refrigeration works.”

Talking about the upcoming launch of the LEGO kit, Tina Holst Helledie, Marketing Communications Manager for Danfoss said: “At Danfoss, we believe the future of refrigeration depends on inspiring the next generation of engineers and technicians,” She added. “We are proud to support the Institute of Refrigeration’s STEM outreach with these LEGO kits, which offer a hands-on way to bring refrigeration principles to life. LEGO is a globally recognised Danish brand, making it a natural match for Danfoss in combining learning, innovation, and play.”

The LEGO kit is one of several resources available to IOR members involved in STEM engagement. In recent years, the IOR has expanded its educational offering with the development of a comprehensive STEM Toolkit and the Fantastic Fridges website (www.fantasticfridges.com), which provides accessible information on the science of cooling and the wide range of careers available in the sector.

This initiative forms part of the IOR’s strategic focus on skills, aimed at strengthening the pipeline of new talent entering the refrigeration, air conditioning, and heat pump industry while supporting the development of the existing workforce. Other key activities include the creation of the Industry Skills Alliance, bringing together employers, educators, and government stakeholders, and the appointment of a dedicated education outreach specialist within the IOR team.

The IOR is developing a team of regional Refrigeration STEM Ambassadors to go into schools and share their enthusiasm for RACHP careers with the help of the Danfoss sponsored LEGO kits.  If you are keen to promote careers to young people and join our STEM Ambassadors group to get ideas and resources to take into schools and colleges contact [email protected] for more information about how to become STEM Learning registered and become part of the IOR STEM network.
