The latest energy attitudes research from Resideo – the manufacturer of the Honeywell Home heating control range - has found that concerns over energy costs do not appear to be subsiding. The poll showed 74%1 of homeowners expressing concerns over 2025/2026 winter energy costs compared to 70%2 for the previous winter.
This means that the impact HVAC installers can have to help guide future heating decision-making is significant, particularly in opening up the benefits of connected control technology to a wider customer base.
"We believe that there is a great opportunity for installers to help more households to better tackle their energy cost concerns through connected thermostats, " said Steve Warrington, Country Sales Director, UK at Resideo. "Our focus is to create a more sustainable future by delivering products and solutions that meet installers and consumer needs of increased heating control and lower energy bills."
The smart opportunity for HVAC installers
-
One out of two homes could benefit from smarter control: Around half (48%) of homeowners that took part in the latest survey currently own a smart/connected thermostat, with the ability to control remotely (38%), compatibility with voice assistants (25%) and energy saving settings (23%) being the primary purchase drivers.
-
Homeowners want professional help on what to buy and to install: Nearly half (48%) of the respondents said they still rely upon a professional installer for guidance on what thermostats to purchase and install, with two thirds (67%) wanting professional installation.
-
Removing barriers to moving to smart: homeowners who have not upgraded to connected heating control either didn’t see the need for it (39%) or felt it was too expensive (27%).
-
Making the case for zoning: Respondents were split on whether they will heat their whole home (55%) or individual occupied rooms (43%). So, proactively explaining how targeted room heating via connected thermostats can help to reduce energy waste and improve comfort levels offers real upsell potential.
