A café bar in Hertfordshire has invested in the latest temperature monitoring technology from Ellab to guard against any eventuality and take the leg work out of manually checking crucial stock.

With high streets striving to get people to return in numbers following the pandemic, the last thing retailers need is to lose valuable stock because of temperature fluctuations caused by unsuitable conditions. Ellab recognises that a local retailer needs product reliability and efficacy just as much as supermarkets.

For independent retailers such as coffee shops, delicatessens, sandwich shops, bakers and farm shops, the challenge is to ensure that fridge and freezer stock in their premises is not subject to potentially dangerous variations or, potentially, equipment failure. And what’s going on when the lights are out, and all the staff are at home?

This was the dilemma facing Stacey Scarborough-Taylor, the owner of Number 41 café bar in Royston. Stacey and her staff started by regularly checking and logging fridge temperatures manually to meet environmental health criteria and for consistency of readings. This added to the café’s daily chores when there were more productive tasks needing attention.

Ellab Monitoring Solutions (formerly Hanwell Solutions), a leading manufacturer of wireless environmental monitoring equipment, had the answer in Notion Lite – highly accurate automated temperature monitoring technology as the ideal alternative to manually checking stock.

Food safety is paramount and Notion Lite automatically picks up the slightest temperature deviations which human senses might miss. Stacey said: “It’s all automated so it’s one less headache. The system is set up and does the work. Alarms will sound if and when there is a problem so you can get on with your other tasks.”

The big test came with an unannounced visit to the café by the environmental health inspector. Stacey added: “Accurate documentation is such a key part of the process. The inspector was pleasantly surprised at the level of tech in place for temperature checks. This saved time and reduced the stress levels usually associated with these inspections.”

Manual monitoring procedures allow for human error which could lead to a crisis if a rise in temperatures goes unchecked and causes spoilage. Quick intervention thanks to accurate, real-time monitoring of temperatures can be vital. That’s where wireless environmental monitoring comes into its own.

Wireless solutions are flexible so you can easily move or expand the number of sensors to ensure they are always in the optimum positions, and provide continuous output for consistent and accurate readings, wherever you are.

The Notion Lite system provides accurate, wireless real-time monitoring 24/7 for fridges or freezers for food businesses such as Number 41 Café/Bar. It records and stores a critical log of historical temperature data, sends out warnings to multiple users and triggers an audible alarm day or night whenever any user-set thresholds are exceeded, providing ultimate peace of mind.
