Professor Eckhard Groll at work at Purdue University
Professor Eckhard Groll was recognised as the 2018 winner of the J & E Hall Gold Medal at the Institute of Refrigeration Dinner in London.
In more than 23 years at Purdue University, Indiana, USA, he has led teams whose work has benefited heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration industries across the globe, with unique contributions in the field of positive displacement compressor analysis.
Together with colleagues and graduate students, he has developed detailed and comprehensive simulation models of hermetic PD compressors, including scroll, rolling piston, reciprocating, linear, rotating spool, bowtie and S-RAM using different working fluids including HFCs, HFOs and natural refrigerants.
Engineers from industrial refrigeration specialist Pennine Environmental Services praised the benefits of a training course in screw compressor technology at Green Point UK, Bitzer’s compressor remanufacturing arm.
Three of the contractor’s refrigeration engineers, two experienced and one trainee, attended the one-day course at Green Point UK’s headquarters in Milton Keynes.
A growing number of ice rinks in the UK are switching to a new approach to refrigeration that is saving end users thousands of pounds a month in energy costs and helping to transform the economics of skating rinks.
The new approach, devised by refrigeration contractor G&O Refrigeration with help from BITZER UK, can cut rink energy bills by more than 50 per cent compared with traditional refrigeration methods. It uses the Gorac refrigeration pack in a system that captures waste heat and harnesses it for use in space heating for offices and leisure areas, and for the provision of sanitary hot water for the building.
Titan Engineering has launched a Witt stainless steel oil drain vessel, the HDB3, which can also be used as an oil distribution vessel.
This type of equipment is usually produced from carbon steel but Titan says that despite the improved quality of stainless over carbon there is very little price difference and the reason for this is that in modern systems as well as an oil connection vessel it can alternate the process and collect oil.
