Fan and motor specialist Ziehl-Abegg has replaced the fans cooling the converter station of BritNed in Rotterdam. BritNed is the operator of the high-voltage direct-current (HDVC) subsea power cable connecting the UK and the Netherlands.
BritNed, a joint venture between the National Grid and TenneT in the Netherlands, is responsible for the transport of electricity between the two countries. The cable connects the Isle of Grain in Kent with Rotterdam, a distance of 256km, and has a capacity of 1,000 MW.
The tests run by Ahold and refrigeration consultancy P.W. Vlaskamp B.V. from Dordrecht showed an 8% energy efficiency improvement after the retrofit using the R-449A refrigerant. In addition, without the extra 'abatement' costs, the entire retrofit would pay for itself within five years.

The Mark Airstream CFX 6400 contains has an aluminium counterflow heat exchanger for recovering extracted heat, which is up to 90% efficient. The outdoor unit has an airflow of of 6400 m3/h. The restaurant has a 600m2 surface area and now gets ventilation without need for extra heating energy.
The kitchen now has three Mark extraction units whose air flow is 4000 m3/h.
